This project derived from my inherent need to connect back to a state of mindfulness. Personally, developing this sense of mindfulness and bliss came from feeling in sync with the natural world and, as a woman, this sense of connection to nature is only heightened, an idea explored in ecofeminism. Women’s connection to nature is fueled by shared domination, oppression and exploitation from traditional patriarchal structures; though because of this shared oppression, women’s bond with nature became one of respect, empathy and understanding. This project aims to capture and explore this relationship by allowing nature to be a fundamental part of my practice. It enables me to surrender myself to nature and allow it to guide my practice as an artist, which is the most ecofeminist thing I can do.
This project isn't about trying to master the art of natural pigments, but showing how as an amateur whose never used natural pigments before, this process can be equally as fulfilling. Even if these pigments are used in conjunction with commercial supplies, the small moment of mindfulness and satisfaction that comes from using materials that are so deeply connected to nature is what this project is all about.
This book is a mix of failures and triumphs, each being able to guide me to a place of fulfillment and satisfaction. It's a small sketchbook full of science projects, landscape studies, color swatches, pattern design, little illustrations and field notes. It’s a physical manifestation of an entire semester’s work of exploration and gratification.
